Big Idea

Prayer is the drive shaft of a life of faith — without alone time with God, our faith never reaches the practical parts of our lives.

Jesus shows us that a powerful, purposeful life flows from time spent alone with the Father, not from crowds or achievement. If we want the results of Jesus' life — peace, purpose, and power — we have to adopt His rhythm of getting alone with God in prayer.

Key points

1
1Jesus constantly withdrew from the crowd to pray, even at the height of His success.
Pastor Daniel points to Luke 5:15-16 and Mark 1:35, where after healing crowds and building influence, Jesus repeatedly withdrew to isolated places to pray. He contrasts this with how a modern influencer would monetize a crowd, showing that Jesus treated prayer, not platform, as the true goal.
2
2Prayer is simply communication, and communication is what proves a relationship is real.
Pastor Daniel argues we've been sold a false, overly ritualized picture of prayer, when in Scripture it looks like ordinary conversation. He compares it to marriage, noting that couples don't fail because of finances or intimacy problems themselves but because they stop communicating about them, and says the same is true of our relationship with God.
3
3Following Jesus' pattern, we need a set time, a set place, and a set strategy for prayer.
Drawing from Jesus' habits, Pastor Daniel encourages picking a consistent time (morning or night), a physical place that becomes a 'tabernacle dwelling place,' and using a strategy or format for prayer, just as Jesus gave the disciples the Lord's Prayer as a model.
4
4Jesus prayed to prepare for His calling, even though He was fully God.
Pastor Daniel walks through Jesus' baptism and the forty days in the wilderness in Luke 4, noting Jesus entered the wilderness full of the Spirit but came out 'filled with the Holy Spirit's power' after prayer, fasting, and trial. He concludes prayer is how we prepare to step into what God has for us.
5
5Jesus prayed to recharge, to grieve, to seek wisdom, to petition, and to model relationship with God for us.
He moves through several scenes: Mark 6:31 (rest), Matthew 14:13 (withdrawing alone after John the Baptist's death), Luke 6:12 (praying all night before choosing the twelve disciples), and Luke 22:39-42 (Gethsemane, praying 'not my will but yours'). He also notes the disciples never asked Jesus to teach them miracles, only to teach them to pray, in Luke 11:1.
6
6The ACTS model gives a practical strategy for prayer: adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication.
Pastor Daniel offers this acronym as a simple format to follow when sitting down to pray, walking through each part with examples, and challenges the church to practice it for fourteen days to build the habit.

I believe with everything in me that prayer is the driving force behind the life of faith

A story from life

Pastor Daniel shares the news that his family is fostering — with the intention to adopt — a newborn baby named Zane, born to a homeless mother who was on drugs.

A story from life

Pastor Daniel tells the story of his truck's driveshaft snapping on a remote road during a family camping trip, leading to a stranger's unexpected help — used as the central analogy for prayer.

Application

Pastor Daniel calls the church to make an appointment with God this week and actually keep it.

Set a consistent time for prayer
Pick a time, morning or night, and treat it like an appointment on your calendar that matters as much as any other commitment.
Choose a set place to meet God
Find a physical spot, an office, a chair, a bench, that becomes the place you consistently meet with God.
Use a strategy when you pray
Follow the ACTS model, adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication, so your mind has a format to return to instead of wandering.
Practice this for the next fourteen days
Spend ten to fifteen minutes a day in scripture and prayer using the model given, to build a new habit and watch God move.

Day 1

Pastor Daniel pointed us first to a quiet pattern in Jesus' life. The crowds were growing. People came from everywhere to hear Him and be healed. By every measure, things were working. And right there, at the height of His success, Jesus "often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer." Notice that word — often. This was not a one-time retreat. It was a rhythm, a habit woven into the fabric of His days. If anyone could have justified skipping prayer because of a packed schedule, it was Jesus. Instead, the busier life got, the more deliberately He pulled away to be with His Father. That tells us prayer is not a personality preference for the spiritually inclined; it is a kingdom principle for everyone who follows Him. Many of us treat alone time with God as the thing we get to once everything else is handled. Jesus reversed that order. He let time with the Father shape everything else. This week, let that simple word — often — sink in. What would it look like for prayer to become a rhythm in your life rather than an emergency exit you reach for only when things fall apart?

For reflection

Where in my week do the demands and noise most crowd out time alone with God?

Pray

Pray for an honest look at the rhythms of your week and a willingness to withdraw.

Day 2

Before Jesus performed a single miracle or preached a single sermon, He spent forty days alone in the wilderness, fasting, praying, and being tested. Pastor Daniel made a striking observation: Jesus went into the wilderness "full of the Holy Spirit," but He came out in "the power of the Spirit." Same Spirit, different realization. Something happened in that alone time with God that prepared Him for His calling. We often want the power without the preparation. We want to be ready for what God has for us without the quiet, hidden, sometimes hard work of being formed in His presence. But the pattern of Jesus suggests that prayer is where we are prepared — where our calling gets clarified and our spiritual muscles get strengthened for what lies ahead. Your wilderness season may not feel powerful right now. It may feel slow, lonely, or uncertain. Yet this could be exactly where God is preparing you for something you cannot yet see. Don't despise the preparation. The time you give to God now is not wasted; it is foundational.

For reflection

What might God be preparing me for in this current season, even if it feels hidden or slow?

Pray

Pray for trust that God is preparing you in the quiet places for the calling ahead.

Day 3

"Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile." Jesus said this to His disciples when they were so busy they didn't even have time to eat. He understood depletion. He knew what it was to be poured out, surrounded by need, running on empty. And His answer was not simply to take a vacation or escape. Pastor Daniel reminded us that what truly recharges the soul is the presence of God — not worldly rest, not a getaway, not a weekend of doing nothing. Those things have their place, but they cannot reach the deepest part of us. Only God restores the soul. If you are tired today, that is not a moral failure; it is human. Jesus invites the weary to come away and be with Him. Rest is not laziness, and it is not earned by exhaustion. It is a gift God offers His children. The question is whether we will receive it His way — by drawing near to Him — or keep searching for restoration in places that can refresh the body but never quite reach the heart.

For reflection

When I feel depleted, where do I usually turn first for relief — and how is that working?

Pray

Pray for the kind of rest that only God's presence can give your tired soul.

Day 4

When Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been killed, He "left in a boat to a remote area to be alone." He was grieving. He had lost His cousin, the one who prepared the way for Him. And Pastor Daniel pointed out what Jesus did with that pain: He ran to His Father. He didn't bury the grief, numb it, or simply let time pass and hope it would fade. He took it straight to God. There's a quiet permission in this for all of us. We sometimes think faith means having it all together, that strong believers don't break down. But Jesus, the Son of God, withdrew to grieve in the presence of His Father. Time alone does not heal the broken places of the soul — God does. If you are carrying loss or pain today, you don't have to manage it on your own or pretend it isn't there. Bring it honestly to God. He is not put off by your tears. He is the one place your grief can be fully known and gently healed. And if your pain feels too heavy to carry alone, let someone at your church walk alongside you in it.

For reflection

What grief or pain have I been carrying without bringing it honestly to God?

Pray

Pray for the courage to bring your loss and pain directly to the Father who heals.

Day 5

Before Jesus chose His twelve disciples — one of the most important decisions of His ministry — He "went up on a mountain to pray, and He prayed to God all night." All night. Pastor Daniel drew out something we easily miss: some God-directed decisions simply cannot be reached through logic and reasoning alone. Jesus didn't make a pros-and-cons list. He sought His Father's heart in extended, focused prayer before He acted. We live in a world that prizes quick decisions and trusts gut instinct. There's nothing wrong with thinking carefully, but for the choices that really matter — the ones that shape the direction of our lives, our families, our work — God offers a wisdom that comes from above and not from within ourselves. The invitation is to slow down and seek Him before we decide, rather than asking Him to bless a choice already made. Are you facing a decision right now? Before you reason your way to an answer, what would it look like to bring it to God and genuinely wait on His wisdom? He gives generously to those who ask.

For reflection

What decision am I currently facing that I have not yet seriously brought before God in prayer?

Pray

Pray for heavenly wisdom on a specific decision, and for the patience to wait on God's leading.

Day 6

In the garden of Gethsemane, facing the cross, Jesus prayed with raw honesty: "Father, if You are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from Me." He did not hide His anguish or pretend to feel something He didn't. He brought His real request to His Father. But He didn't stop there. He continued, "Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine." Pastor Daniel showed us that this is the shape of mature prayer — honest petition held together with genuine surrender. We are invited to ask boldly, to tell God what we actually want, to come as we are. And we are also invited to trust that His will is better than ours, even when His answer is not the one we hoped for. This is hard. Surrender always is. But Hebrews tells us we can "come boldly to the throne of our gracious God," knowing we will find mercy and grace there. Your honest requests are welcome. So is your weakness. Bring both to God today — the asking and the yielding — and trust that the Father who loves you knows what He's doing.

For reflection

What honest request do I need to bring to God, while still surrendering it to His will?

Pray

Pray honestly for what you long for, and ask for grace to surrender it to God's good will.

Day 7

Of all the things the disciples could have asked Jesus to teach them, they asked just one: "Lord, teach us to pray." They had watched Him heal, preach, and calm storms, yet they recognized that His prayer life was the source of it all. This week we've seen Jesus withdraw often to be with His Father — to prepare for His calling, to recharge, to grieve, to seek wisdom, and to surrender His will. Prayer was not a supplement to His life; it was the thing that made everything else work. Now Pastor Daniel hands us a simple, practical challenge: make an appointment with God every single day, and keep it. Pick a time. Choose a place. Use ACTS — Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication — to give it shape. Do it for 14 days, the time it takes to form a habit. The promise isn't that life will get easier, but that you'll begin to notice God moving in ways you hadn't before. This is how we know Jesus better — through His Word and through honest conversation with Him. Don't go it alone, either; invite a friend to build the habit alongside you. Start today.

For reflection

What specific time and place will I set aside to meet with God this week — and who can help me keep it?

Pray

Pray for resolve to keep a daily appointment with God, and for eyes to notice how He moves.

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Most of us have a daily rhythm we never skip — coffee, checking our phones, a commute. This message looks at the rhythm Jesus never skipped: withdrawing to be alone with God in prayer.

Discussion questions

1
In Luke 5:15-16, Jesus withdraws to pray right as His ministry and the crowds are growing. What does it tell us that He pulled away precisely when things were going well?
2
The message described prayer not as a religious ritual or a last resort, but as the communication that sustains a real relationship with God. How does thinking of prayer as relationship rather than ritual change the way people approach it?
3
In Mark 6:31, Jesus invites His disciples to come away and rest in God's presence. Why might the presence of God restore the soul in a way that vacation or ordinary rest cannot?
4
Before choosing the twelve, Jesus prayed all night (Luke 6:12). What does this suggest about the kind of decisions that logic and reasoning alone can't get us to?
5
In Gethsemane, Jesus brings His honest request to the Father yet surrenders with 'not My will, but Yours' (Luke 22:39-42). How might holding honesty and surrender together reshape the way we bring our own requests to God?
6
Pastor Daniel challenged us to make a daily appointment with God for 14 days — a set time, a specific place, and the ACTS model (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) for structure. What would it look like for us to take a small, concrete step toward that rhythm this week, just between each of us and God?

Pray together

Thank God that He invites us into real relationship through prayer, and ask Him to help each person carve out unhurried time alone with Him this week.
