Key points
1Jesus assumes prayer is the normal life of a follower, done in private, not for public image
Working through Matthew 6:5-6, Pastor Daniel points out Jesus says 'when you pray,' not 'if,' assuming prayer is the lifeblood of faith. Jesus warns against praying to be seen, like the hypocrites on street corners (or, as Pastor Daniel updates it, on Instagram), and instead calls people to pray in private where the Father sees and rewards.
God cannot and will not bless the person that you're pretending to be
2The purpose of prayer is not influencing God but experiencing intimacy with Him
Pastor Daniel challenges the idea of God as a 'cosmic vending machine' we manipulate with the right prayer, pointing instead to Genesis 3, where God walked with Adam and Eve in the garden with no crisis to fix. He also points to Jesus withdrawing from ministry crowds simply to be alone with the Father, showing prayer is meant to move from discipline to desire.
3Jesus' own prayer in John 17 reveals He is praying for our unity and our relationship with God, not just our requests
Reading John 17:20-21, Pastor Daniel shows Jesus praying for every future believer and for the church to be one, arguing the church's greatest threats are internal division, not outside forces. This models that prayer's aim is relationship and unity, not simply getting requests answered.
prayer is not about informing God. It's not about influencing God. It's about experiencing intimacy with God

4The promise of prayer is that God's will gets accomplished through God's people
Citing Augustine ('without God, we cannot... without us, God will not'), John Wesley ('God does nothing but by prayer'), and James 5:16, Pastor Daniel argues our prayers carry real weight in the supernatural realm and that God is waiting for willing participants to say 'God, use me.'
without God, we cannot. That you and I, we can't do anything without God but here's the part we often forget. He says that without us, God will not
this year, the intensity of my problems will never outpace the intensity of my prayer
5Fasting, taught right alongside prayer in Matthew 6, is God's appointed path to humility
From Matthew 6:16-18, Pastor Daniel notes Jesus again assumes fasting is normal practice and again ties it to private devotion rewarded by God. He connects this to 1 Peter 5 and James 4, that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, and to King David's fasting in Psalm 35:13 to seek God's face for the nation.
The purpose of fasting I believe is is humility
life has a way of humbling you
6Fasting is practically defined as abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose, and it has many workable forms
Pastor Daniel clarifies that a social media fast is helpful but not biblical fasting; biblical fasting is tied to food. He lists options — juice/water only, a Daniel fast, no meat or sweets, skipping a meal, or eating only after sunset — and shares that the church will hand out a twenty-one day guide starting the following Monday.
7Second Chronicles 7:14 gives four actions God asks of His people, with a promise attached to them
Pastor Daniel walks through humbling ourselves (through fasting), praying, seeking God's face (corporate worship), and turning from wicked ways (repentance) as the four conditions, tying them together as this year's whole-church rhythm of surrender.
A story from life
Pastor Daniel recounts how seasons of prayer and fasting shaped his call to ministry, his pursuit of his future wife Ashley, his move to Arizona, and the founding of Echoes Church.
Application
Pastor Daniel's charge is that this year the intensity of your prayers, not your problems, should set the cadence of your life.
Commit to pray first in every circumstance
Whether sick or blessed, struggling or thriving in marriage and finances, make prayer the first move rather than a last resort this year.
Join the twenty-one day prayer and fasting season
Starting the following Monday, follow the church's daily guide for twenty-one days of seeking God's face together as a church, leading into a worship weekend.
Choose a way to fast and prepare this week
Pick a form of fasting (liquid only, a Daniel fast, cutting meat or sweets, skipping a meal, or eating only after sunset) and use this week to get ready before the fast begins.
Write down what you're believing God for
Take a moment now to write down what you need God to do in 2026 and hold it up in faith as an act of trust.
Turn from your own way toward God's
Following 2 Chronicles 7:14, let prayer and fasting lead to real repentance, trusting God's plans over your own instead of just asking for change.
Take it into your week
