Thesis
Drawing from the brief but powerful prayer of Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, this sermon teaches that pain does not have to define our identity, and that God responds to bold, passionate, rightly-ordered prayer. Jabez modeled four essential requests every believer should bring to God: blessing, expanded territory, God's abiding presence, and protection from harm. When we align our lives with God's order and bring these requests before Him with passion and faith, we position ourselves for God to grant them—just as He did for Jabez.
Key points
- 1
Pain and hardship do not have to define your identity; your identity in Christ is greater than your trauma or struggles.
- 2
Pray boldly for God's blessing, understanding that blessing follows order—God blesses lives that are aligned with His ways.
- 3
Pray for enlarged territory—an increase in influence, resources, and impact—not for ego but for kingdom impact and generosity.
- 4
Pray for God's presence to remain with you, recognizing that nothing of eternal value can be accomplished without His Spirit.
- 5
Pray for protection—both from spiritual opposition and from situations that tempt you—using wisdom to avoid battles you don't need to fight.
- 6
God cannot answer prayers that go unprayed; He waits for you to bring your specific requests before Him, just as He asked Bartimaeus what he wanted.
Outline
Introduction: The Context of Jabez
The pastor introduces Jabez, a largely overlooked figure in a genealogy whose name means 'sorrowful and born in pain,' setting up the tension between painful identity and God-given purpose.
Pain as a Crossroads
Pain will either define you or craft you into who God wants you to be; the key is what you run to when you experience it, and Jabez models running to prayer.
Jabez Cries Out: Passion and the Person We Pray To
Jabez brings passion to prayer and directs it to the God of Israel—the power of prayer is not in the words but in the Person being addressed.
Prayer Point 1 — Bless Me
Believers are encouraged to pray boldly for God's blessing and supernatural favor, while understanding that blessing follows order and right alignment with God.
Prayer Point 2 — Enlarge My Territory
Praying for increase in influence and resources is not about ego but about kingdom impact; God enriches His people so they can be generous and point others to Him.
Prayer Point 3 — Let Your Hand Be With Me
The prayer for God's presence acknowledges that nothing of eternal value happens by human might but by His Spirit; believers must remain dependent and continually filled.
Prayer Point 4 — Keep Me From Harm
Protection involves both asking God to push back spiritual opposition and exercising wisdom to flee temptation rather than fight battles we don't need to engage.
God Granted His Request: The Call to Pray
God cannot answer prayers that are never prayed; just as Jesus asked Bartimaeus what he wanted, He invites us to bring our specific requests before Him with faith.
Memorable moments
pain will always do one of two things to you. It can define you or it can begin to become something that that that crafts you into who God wants you to be, but you've gotta make a decision
Dependency is the goal
We are going to be we will always be a presence driven church. I think we should be a presence driven people
God can't answer prayers that you don't pray. He can't answer requests that you don't bring to him
what will either define you is the intensity of your problems or the intensity of your prayers
Blessing follows order. We serve a God of order, and he will not bless that which is out of order
Application
The sermon calls every listener to stop treating prayer as a last resort and start making it their first response—especially in pain. Practically, this means praying the four requests of Jabez daily: ask God to bless you and enlarge your influence, invite His presence to go before you, and ask for protection from harm. But praying for blessing also requires honest self-examination—are your finances, relationships, and habits ordered in a way that positions you for God's favor? Where they are not, bring them back into alignment. Finally, bring your single most pressing need before God by name. He is not waiting for a perfect prayer; He is waiting for an honest one.
