Big Idea

The world celebrates starting strong, but God celebrates finishing strong, and Romans 15 shows that a strong finish is a faithful finish.

Paul closes Romans not with more talk of success or productivity but with how we treat other people. Finishing well means refusing to quit or coast, and instead staying rooted in God's word, connected through prayer, at peace with others, and focused on Jesus all the way to the end.

Key points

1
1Finishing strong is about more for others, not more for self
Pastor Joshua opens in Romans 15:1-3, where Paul says the strong must be considerate of others and not just please themselves, following the example of Christ who did not live to please Himself. He notes that sin bends our lives inward toward self, but the gospel bends our lives outward toward God and others, so finishing well means helping others cross the finish line too.
2
2There are only three ways to finish: quit, coast, or finish strong
Using the story of a friend who sold Bitcoin early and missed out on huge later gains, Pastor Joshua illustrates how quitting too soon costs us the hope that comes on the other side of endurance. He defines discipline as staying committed to the assignment long after the excitement fades, warning that feeling your way into a calling means you'll feel your way out of it too.
3
3Coasting looks comfortable but quietly stops growth
He describes coasting as looking present but being mentally checked out, like someone working out their two weeks' notice, and warns that comfort causes people to stop showing up, investing in others, and deepening their faith. He cautions that tearing down a church or job on the way out reveals a life that has become about self rather than about building up others.
4
4Faithful people stay rooted in God's word
Working through Romans 15:4, Pastor Joshua traces the progression from endurance to encouragement to hope, and reminds listeners that God is never early or late even when His promises take longer than expected, citing Noah, Abraham, David, and Jesus' thirty years before ministry. He adds Jonah, Esther, and Paul as examples that if God used them, He can use us too.
5
5Faithful people stay connected through prayer
He explains that prayer exchanges our weakness for God's strength and is the difference between walking in our own power and walking in His. Quoting Mark Batterson's line about irregular things happening when we pray regularly, he points to Paul's own request for prayer in Romans 15:30 as proof that if Paul needed it, we need it even more.
6
6Faithful people get along with other people
From Romans 15:7, Pastor Joshua argues spiritual maturity is measured not by Bible knowledge but by how we love people we disagree with, dislike, or who have hurt us, since the gospel reconciled us not only to God but to one another. He challenges the room to stop over-spiritualizing conflict, recognize themselves as the common denominator in recurring conflict, and trade criticism for compassion and offense for forgiveness.
7
7Faithful people stay focused on Jesus
Closing in Romans 15:13, he urges turning every what if into an even if, keeping eyes fixed on Jesus regardless of circumstances, because faith built on circumstances collapses while faith built on the Savior holds. He points to Jesus, who did not quit or coast but endured the cross and finished strong, as the pattern for our own finish.

That no matter your background, your upbringing, your current season of life, even your age, man, this one is crucial

Application

Pastor Joshua frames the whole message as a choice among three finishes: quit, coast, or finish strong.

Stay committed instead of quitting
Whatever season or calling you're in, stay connected, stay disciplined, and stay the course even when the excitement fades and it takes longer than you want.
Refuse to coast in comfort
Notice when you've stopped showing up, investing in others, or deepening your faith, and if you do leave a church, job, or community, leave it better than you found it.
Root yourself in God's word daily
Read scripture not to keep a streak alive but to grow in endurance and encouragement that leads to real hope, remembering God's promises come on His timing.
Make prayer a regular practice
Trade your own strength for God's by spending time with Him instead of just seeking more effort or more places to find strength.
Get along with people you struggle to love
Give people the benefit of the doubt, choose compassion over criticism and forgiveness over offense, and pursue unity with those you disagree with or who have hurt you this week.
Fix your eyes on Jesus, not circumstances
Turn every what if into an even if, keeping your hope anchored in Jesus rather than in outcomes, diagnoses, promotions, or relationships.

Day 1

The world loves a strong start — the packed launch, the fresh resolution, the energy of day one. But Pastor Joshua opened this final message in Romans by pointing us somewhere the world rarely looks: the finish. And Paul's very first move as he closes his letter isn't about our achievements at all. It's about others. "We who are strong must be considerate of those who are weak. We should not just please ourselves" (Romans 15:1, NLT). Paul grounds this in Christ, who "did not live to please himself" (Romans 15:3, NLT). Pastor Joshua put it plainly: sin bends our lives inward toward self, but the gospel bends them outward toward God and others. Finishing strong, then, isn't crossing the line alone with our arms raised. It's helping other people cross it too. That reframes the whole week ahead of us. Maybe you've thought of maturity as knowing more or doing more. This opening word invites you to measure it differently — by whether your life is bending outward. It's a warm invitation, not an accusation. The direction of the heart matters more than a perfect record. Where might God be gently turning you toward someone else today?

For reflection

Where has my life been bending inward toward self, and what would one small outward step look like today?

Pray

Ask God to bend your heart outward toward one specific person this week.

Day 2

Related passage

Pastor Joshua named three ways a race can end: we can quit, we can coast, or we can finish strong. He told the story of a friend who bought Bitcoin at $271, doubled his money, and sold — before it climbed to $65,000. The man didn't fail. He just quit too early. That image stays with me because quitting rarely feels dramatic. It feels reasonable. The excitement fades, results are slow, and stepping away seems sensible. But Paul, Pastor Joshua reminded us, speaks of endurance before hope, because we can't taste the hope on the other side of something if we abandon it in the middle. Scripture says it this way: "So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up" (Galatians 6:9, NLT). Notice the promise is real but the timing is God's. Pastor Joshua defined discipline as staying committed to the assignment long after the excitement fades. That's not grinding for its own sake — it's trusting that the harvest is coming. If you're weary today, that weariness is human and honest. The invitation isn't to feel more; it's simply not to give up.

For reflection

What good thing am I tempted to walk away from just before the harvest — and why?

Pray

Pray for renewed endurance in the specific assignment you're tempted to quit.

Day 3

Related passage

If quitting is the loud danger, coasting is the quiet one. Pastor Joshua described it well: coasting doesn't look rebellious at first. We're still physically present — still in the room, still on the roll — but we've stopped showing up in the ways that matter. We stop investing, stop deepening, stop growing. He compared it to working out a two weeks' notice, already checked out while still clocking in. And here's the sobering line: growth never happens in comfort. Jesus spoke to a church in exactly this drift: "I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water... I will spit you out of my mouth!" (Revelation 3:15-16, NLT). Strong words — but they come from love, not contempt. Pastor Joshua also warned that when church becomes about our personal preferences, we can quietly turn worship of God into a subtle worship of self. That's worth sitting with honestly and without panic. Coasting isn't a verdict on whether you belong to Jesus; it's a question about where your heart is pointed. Comfort isn't the enemy — but it's not where growth lives either.

For reflection

Where have I settled into 'present but checked out,' and what would re-engaging look like?

Pray

Ask God to reawaken your heart wherever comfort has quietly replaced growth.

Day 4

How do you keep going when the excitement is long gone? Pastor Joshua's first answer was to stay rooted in God's word — not to build our faith on experiences or emotions, which rise and fall, but on something steadier. He traced Paul's progression: "Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope" (Romans 15:4, NIV). Scripture builds endurance, endurance leads to encouragement, and encouragement produces hope. That's a chain worth remembering when you feel like you have none of the three. He walked us through the long-waiters — Noah, Abraham, David, even Jesus — people who waited years for God's promises. And he named the flawed and unlikely ones too: Jonah, Esther, Paul. His point was tender and direct: if God did it for them, He can do it for us. That's the encouragement Scripture is designed to hand us. When emotions run dry, the Word doesn't. It's not a feeling to chase but a foundation to stand on. Where do you most need Scripture to steady you today?

For reflection

Which promise or story in Scripture do I most need to stand on this week?

Pray

Pray for a hunger for God's word to steady you when emotions run dry.

Day 5

Pastor Joshua's second root for a faithful finish was prayer — and he framed it in a way that lifts a burden. Prayer, he said, is where we exchange our weakness for God's strength. The answer to spiritual exhaustion isn't doing more; it's spending more time with God. If you've been trying to muscle through in your own strength, that's not a failing to be ashamed of — it's simply the wrong fuel, and there's a better one. He pointed to Paul himself, who wrote, "Dear brothers and sisters, I urge you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to join in my struggle by praying to God for me" (Romans 15:30, NLT). Think about that. Paul — the apostle who wrote much of the New Testament — asked ordinary believers to pray for him. If Paul needed prayer, Pastor Joshua noted, we need it even more. He also shared a line from author Mark Batterson: when we pray regularly, irregular things start happening on a regular basis. Prayer isn't a performance or a last resort. It's staying connected to the only source of strength that doesn't run out. What would it look like to make prayer regular rather than reactive this week?

For reflection

Where am I trying to muscle through in my own strength instead of asking God for His?

Pray

Ask God to help you make prayer regular rather than a last resort.

Day 6

Here's where a faithful finish gets practical — and personal. Pastor Joshua insisted that spiritual maturity can't be separated from how we treat people. There is, in his memorable phrase, no such thing as "jerks for Jesus." Maturity is measured by love, not by how much we know. Paul writes, "Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory" (Romans 15:7, NLT). Accept each other — including the people who disagree with us, who've hurt us, or who don't like us back. That's the hard, holy work. Pastor Joshua challenged us to stop over-spiritualizing our conflicts and to honestly ask whether we might be the common denominator when the same tensions keep showing up. That's not a shaming question; it's a freeing one, because it points to something we can actually bring to God. He invited the church to set mid-year resolutions — more compassion, more forgiveness, more unity — and to leave any place we exit better than we found it. Knowledge can be gathered alone. Love can only be practiced with other people, especially the difficult ones. Who is God placing in front of you to accept the way Christ accepted you?

For reflection

Who is hard for me to accept right now, and what would 'accept each other' look like with them?

Pray

Pray for compassion, forgiveness, and unity toward one difficult person by name.

Day 7

Tomorrow the ordinary week begins again — the commute, the inbox, the people, the uncertainties. So how do we actually live this out once the sermon is behind us? Pastor Joshua's closing word was to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, and he gave us one concrete move: stop playing the "what if" game and start speaking "even if." What if this doesn't work out? What if the diagnosis is bad, the door stays closed, the relationship stays hard? Turn each one over. Even if — I will trust Him. Even if — I won't quit or coast. That shift doesn't deny that hard circumstances are real or that fear is human; it simply refuses to let the unknown have the final word. Paul prays, "I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13, NLT). Pastor Joshua reminded us that Jesus Himself did not quit or coast — He endured the cross and finished strong. Looking at Him is what shapes us to look like Him. So this week, one "even if" at a time, keep your eyes on Jesus. The goal was never impressive; it was faithful.

For reflection

What 'what if' is weighing on me right now, and how could I reframe it as an 'even if' this week?

Pray

Ask God to help you trade one specific 'what if' for an 'even if' this week.
