Key points
1Jesus had the right to skip the temple tax, but chose to provide for it supernaturally
Pastor Daniel walks through Matthew 17, explaining that the temple tax funded the temple's operation and that as God's Son, Jesus was exempt from paying it, much like a child of a business owner. Yet Jesus tells Peter to catch a fish that will have a coin in its mouth to pay it anyway, setting up the miracle.
2Culture offers two false options for provision — hustle or give up — but there's a third way: watching Jesus supernaturally provide
He names the tension between grind culture and throwing up your hands in despair over the economy, then points to a third posture available to those who trust Jesus as provider, not just savior.
3God has proven Himself a provider, including in Pastor Daniel's own life and in planting the church
He tells the story of leaving sales for ministry, facing an impossible mortgage payment, and receiving an escrow refund check for almost the exact amount needed. He connects this to launching Echo Church and raising large sums for equipment and a building, teaching that where God guides, God provides.
I want you to understand that Jesus isn't just our savior, he's also our provider
when God asks you to go somewhere, if you are willing to say yes and step out in it, God will supernaturally provide
where God guides, God provides
when you are in God's will, I promise you, it's God's bill
A story from life
Pastor Daniel recounts a season early in ministry when he and his wife faced an inability to pay their mortgage, and an escrow refund check arrived within dollars of the exact amount needed.
4Check your motives before asking God for more
Using Jesus' willingness to pay the tax so as not to offend the collectors, he argues Jesus laid down His rights to build bridges rather than create barriers. He challenges believers to examine whether they want more for comfort or to expand God's kingdom and reach people.
You can preach an offensive gospel without being an offensive person
they are not the problem. They are the purpose
5Embrace the gifts and job God already gave you
He observes that Jesus sent Peter, a fisherman, to fish rather than giving him a new skill, and notes that Jesus often returned people to their existing trades after saving them. He urges people to see their current job as worship and a vehicle for God's provision rather than something to escape.
6Handle current blessings with faithful stewardship
Peter only needed one fish, not twelve, because his hope was in the God who provided, not the provision itself. Pastor Daniel ties this to the parable of the talents and the promise of 'well done, good and faithful servant,' urging listeners to manage what they already have well.
A story from life
Pastor Daniel shares a lighthearted story about reluctantly getting ducks for his children, using it as a picture of a father's delight in giving good gifts.
Application
Where God guides, God provides — but our part is obedience, generosity, and faithful stewardship of what's already in our hands.
Check your motives before asking for more
Before asking God for promotion, increase, or influence, ask why you want it — for comfort or to build bridges and expand His kingdom to reach people.
Embrace the gifts and job you already have
Stop asking God to change your circumstances and instead ask Him for a new vision inside your current job, seeing your work itself as worship.
Decide on a percentage and give generously
Pick a percentage of your income, however small, and commit to it as an act of trust in God's provision rather than giving reluctantly or not at all.
Practice the ten workplace habits
Show up on time, stay off your phone, be a peacemaker, go the extra mile, ask for feedback, and pray for coworkers as ways of stewarding your current job well.
Bring your needs honestly to God
If you're carrying a financial burden this week, raise your hand and pray, telling Jesus specifically what you need rather than staying silent or ashamed.
Take it into your week
