Big Idea

The resurrection of Jesus proves that your story isn't finished being written — if He conquered death, He can bring dead things in your life back to life too.

Jesus meets people in their disappointment, walking alongside them even when they don't recognize Him. When we remember God's promises, learn to recognize His presence, and respond by inviting Him in rather than just admiring Him from a distance, our discouragement can turn into a story that's still being written.

Key points

1
1Everyone responds differently to the story of Jesus' death and resurrection
Pastor Daniel opens with a story about being unable to stop watching the show Severance even though he doesn't enjoy it, just to get closure, and notes how differently people respond to compelling stories. He connects this to how people in Luke 24 responded differently to Jesus' death — some in fear and hiding, some walking away in grief.
2
2Two disciples walk the road to Emmaus in deep discouragement
Pastor Daniel walks through Luke 24:13-14, describing two followers of Jesus on a slow, three-hour, seven-mile walk home after the crucifixion, not for recreation but out of frustration and disappointment. He notes they were heading home to face friends and family who had warned them not to follow Jesus, having seen miracles firsthand and now not knowing what to do with it all.
3
3Jesus draws near in seasons of disappointment
From Luke 24:15-17, Pastor Daniel shows that one of the first things resurrected Jesus does is come alongside two grieving, largely unknown disciples, revealing that God is near the brokenhearted. He contrasts this with a popular skeptical theory (raised on a Joe Rogan podcast) that Jesus merely survived the crucifixion, walking through the brutal realities of Roman crucifixion to show that theory doesn't hold up, and that God's character is shown in His pursuit of hurting people.
4
4Discouragement is the gap between expectation and experience, and left unaddressed it can derail your destiny
Pastor Daniel defines discouragement as dissatisfaction with the past and distaste for the present that can grow into distrust of the future. Using lighthearted examples (Yeezys, a fast-food burger photo, football hopes), he shows how expectation gaps create space the enemy wants to fill with lies rather than trust.
5
5Remember God's promises even when your circumstances say otherwise
Working through Luke 24:18-25, Pastor Daniel highlights Cleopas's line 'we had hoped' and Jesus' rebuke that they were foolish not to believe what the prophets had written. He reminds listeners that Jesus had told His followers plainly He would rise, yet pain became so loud they forgot the promise, and he cites Hebrews 13:5, Psalm 34, Romans 8:28, and John 16 as anchors to hold onto when life doesn't match expectation.
6
6Recognize God's presence even when you don't feel it
Pastor Daniel notes that the resurrection — the very thing the disciples were waiting for — had already happened, but their pain blinded them to it, comparing it to his wife repeatedly losing a phone that was in her pocket the whole time. He urges listeners not to be so consumed by their circumstances that they miss that God is with them the whole time.
7
7Invite Jesus in rather than just admiring Him from a distance
From Luke 24:28-31, Pastor Daniel shows that the disciples' eyes were opened only after they invited Jesus to stay with them, and that Jesus does not force His way into anyone's life but waits to be invited in. He connects this to Revelation 3:20 and to the Stark family testimony video shown in the service, emphasizing that being a fan of Jesus changes nothing but becoming a follower changes everything.

A story from life

Pastor Daniel shares a story about his wife finding him watching season two of Severance, despite not liking the show, to illustrate how people respond differently to compelling stories.

Application

Pastor Daniel frames the response around three moves: remember God's promises, recognize His presence, and respond to His power by inviting Him in.

Remember God's promises over your circumstances
When life looks different than expected, choose to focus on God's promises rather than the problem; anchor your heart in Scripture's promises like Hebrews 13:5, Psalm 34, Romans 8:28, and John 16 before pain drowns them out.
Recognize that God is already with you
Don't let pain, bitterness, or frustration blind you to God's presence in your current season; He is near even when you can't feel Him, so look for Him rather than assuming He's absent.
Invite Jesus into your brokenness, not just admire Him
Move from merely being interested in Jesus to actively inviting Him into your addiction, pain, or broken relationships this week, trusting Him to begin healing from the inside out.
Surrender your life to Jesus today
If God is stirring something in you, respond now by confessing Jesus as Lord and Savior and asking Him into your heart, as Pastor Daniel led the congregation to pray.

Take it into your week

Day 1

Two followers of Jesus are walking away from Jerusalem, talking through their heartbreak. They had expected one thing — a Messiah who would set everything right — and got another: a cross and an empty hope. The sermon named this the dangerous gap between our expectations and our experiences, and it's a gap most of us know. You hoped the diagnosis would be different. You thought the marriage would last, the job would come through, the child would come home. When life falls short of what we pictured, discouragement quietly moves in. And left alone, it doesn't just make us sad — it can pull us off the road God meant us to walk. Notice these two are heading the wrong direction, away from the city where the resurrection news was breaking. Discouragement has a way of doing that. The good news of this passage is that it doesn't end here. But honesty has to come first. Before we can welcome Jesus into our pain, we have to admit the pain is real and name where our expectations went unmet. God is not afraid of your disappointment, and He doesn't ask you to pretend it away.

For reflection

Where in your life right now is there a gap between what you expected and what you've experienced?

Pray

Ask God for honesty about a disappointment you've been carrying without naming.

Day 2

Here is the quiet wonder of the Emmaus road: "As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus Himself suddenly came and began walking with them." They didn't go find Him. They weren't even looking in the right direction. The risen Jesus came to them — sought them out in their confusion and grief — and simply started walking alongside them. The sermon made much of this, and rightly so. Jesus does not wait at the finish line for us to get our act together. He draws near in the middle of the disappointment, in the very conversation where we're trying to make sense of what went wrong. What's striking is that they didn't recognize Him at first. His presence didn't depend on their awareness of it. He was just as near when they couldn't see Him as when, later, their eyes were opened. That's a steadying truth for the days you feel utterly alone. The same Jesus who walked an emptying road with two defeated friends walks with you. You may not feel Him. You may not recognize Him yet. But He is there, keeping pace with you, patient and unhurried.

For reflection

When you feel alone, what would change if you trusted that Jesus is already walking beside you?

Pray

Ask Jesus to help you sense His nearness in a place you've felt He was absent.

Day 3

Jesus listens to the whole sad story, and then He says something tender but firm: "You foolish people. You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures." He isn't scolding them for hurting — He's pointing out that they had something to anchor to and let it slip beneath the weight of their pain. The promises were there all along; the grief just got louder. The sermon called us to remember God's promises rather than let pain drown them out, to trust an unknown future to a very known God. That's why it matters to stuff your heart with Scripture before the hard day comes. When the enemy's lies get loud — you've been forgotten, it's over, nothing will change — you need something truer and louder to reach for. The two travelers had the words but couldn't recall them in their distress. We can do better by hiding God's Word in our hearts now, in community with others who will remind us when we forget. The future is genuinely unknown to you. But the God who holds it is not unknown. You have walked with Him before.

For reflection

What promise of God do you most need to memorize so it's ready when your pain gets loud?

Pray

Ask the Spirit to bring one specific Scripture to mind the next time discouragement speaks.

Day 4

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed." Not the put-together. Not those who have figured it out. The brokenhearted and the crushed. The sermon pressed this point hard: God's presence does not depend on our awareness of it. He has been with you the whole time, even when the pain blinded you to it. There's real comfort in learning to recognize what was true all along. Look back over a hard season — a loss, a stretch of doubt, a valley you weren't sure you'd survive. Can you see, now, places where He was holding you even when you felt utterly alone? That's not sentimental wishful thinking; it's the testimony Scripture invites us to build. Recognizing His past faithfulness trains us to trust His present nearness. So today, practice it. Slow down enough to name where God has been near. Tell someone. Write it down. The crushed spirit doesn't disqualify you from His closeness — it's exactly the place He promises to be. Your feelings are real, and they are not the final word on whether He is here.

For reflection

Looking back, where can you now see God was near in a season you felt alone?

Pray

Thank God for a specific moment He carried you that you only recognize now.

Day 5

"Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear My voice and open the door, I will come in." This was the most urgent invitation of the sermon, and it's worth sitting with. Jesus knocks. He does not break the door down. He waits to be welcomed. The two travelers experienced this exactly — Jesus acted as though He would walk on past, and only when they urged Him, "Stay with us," did He come in. Their eyes were opened the moment they invited Him in. Here's the freeing part: you don't have to clean up first. Stop waiting until you have your life together. Open the door now — to the addiction, the broken relationship, the grief, the disappointment you've been managing alone. You don't have to present Him a tidy room. You just have to say yes and let Him in as you are. He is eager, not reluctant. The resurrection proves that dead things can come back to life, and that same power crosses the threshold the moment you welcome Him. The door handle, in this picture, is on your side.

For reflection

What room of your life have you kept closed, telling yourself you'll open it once you're ready?

Pray

Invite Jesus, in your own words, into the one place you've been keeping shut.

Day 6

"I will never fail you. I will never abandon you." The whole week has circled this promise, and today we name it plainly. The Emmaus road works because of who Jesus is — One who draws near, walks alongside, and will not leave. His commitment to you doesn't rise and fall with your performance or even your awareness. "Never" is a strong word, and He means it. This is where the truths we've been studying become a way of living, not just believing. If He will never leave you, then you can risk obedience in the dark. You can give your time to someone who's hurting because you trust you won't run out of God. You can use your gifts and your resources to point others to Jesus because your security rests in Him, not in what you hold back. You can tell your story — even the unfinished parts — because His faithfulness, not your tidiness, is the testimony. A God who never abandons us frees us to stop self-protecting and start pouring out. Living it out begins with believing He's not going anywhere.

For reflection

If you truly believed Jesus will never leave you, what would you risk doing for someone else this week?

Pray

Ask God to show you one concrete way to live out His faithfulness toward another person.

Day 7

Read the whole road to Emmaus today, start to finish. Watch the arc. Two discouraged people walk the wrong way, weighed down by the gap between what they hoped and what they got. Jesus draws near, though they can't see Him. He reminds them of the promises they'd forgotten. He stays when they invite Him in. And then — "their eyes were opened and they recognized Him." They rush back to Jerusalem the same hour, the direction reversed, the grief turned to testimony. That's the week in one passage: discouragement is real, Jesus is near, His promises hold, His presence doesn't depend on our awareness, and everything turns the moment we welcome Him in. The resurrection isn't only an Easter celebration to mark once a year. It's a power meant to be personally experienced — proof that dead things, dead hopes, dead relationships, dead places in you, can come back to life. You don't have to manufacture that. You just have to open the door and then, like those two, go tell someone what Jesus has done. The road that felt like an ending became the start of the best news they'd ever carry.

For reflection

What is the one step — Word, community, or surrender — God is inviting you to take coming out of this week?

Pray

Ask Jesus to make His resurrection power real and personal in one specific place you'd given up on.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Most of us know what it feels like to walk away from something hoping it would go one way, only to have it go another. This message follows two travelers on the road to Emmaus who were carrying exactly that kind of letdown — and met Jesus in the middle of it.

Discussion questions

1
In Luke 24, the two travelers are walking away from Jerusalem talking over everything that had happened. How does the sermon describe the gap between what they expected and what they experienced?
2
Jesus draws near and walks with them, but they are kept from recognizing Him. What does it suggest about Jesus that He comes alongside people before they even know it's Him?
3
The sermon talked about anchoring our hearts to God's promises when pain gets loud. Why might remembering what God has said be so hard for people in the middle of disappointment?
4
The message points out that God's presence with us doesn't depend on our awareness of it. How might that change the way we encourage someone who feels alone in a dark season?
5
In Revelation 3:20, Jesus stands at the door and knocks but waits to be invited in. What do we learn about Him from the fact that He won't force His way into our brokenness?
6
The travelers' eyes were opened the moment they welcomed Jesus in and He broke the bread. What does this account show us about moving from hearing about the resurrection to personally experiencing it?

Pray together

Thank Jesus that He draws near to the discouraged and walks with us even when we can't see Him; ask Him for eyes to recognize His presence and the courage to open the door and invite Him into whatever feels like it's over.
