Big Idea

God has given every believer a sword — the word of God — and it's meant not just for defense but for fighting back against the enemy's attacks on our appetite, our need for approval, and our ambition.

Every believer is in a real spiritual battle, and God has equipped us not only to defend ourselves but to fight back with the sword of the Spirit, the word of God. Following Jesus's example in the wilderness, we can resist the enemy's attacks on our appetite, our need for approval, and our ambition by speaking and standing on scripture until the enemy flees.

Key points

1
1Ephesians moves from belief to behavior, and proper belief always precedes proper behavior
Pastor Mark explains that the first three chapters of Ephesians establish identity in Christ — chosen, adopted, redeemed — purely by grace, not performance, before the last three chapters address how that identity should shape daily life, unity, relationships, and standing firm spiritually.
2
2Paul tells believers to put on the full armor of God because the battle is spiritual, not against flesh and blood
Reading Ephesians 6:10-17, Pastor Mark walks through the armor piece by piece and highlights that most pieces are defensive, but the sword of the Spirit is explicitly named as the word of God and is the one offensive weapon.
3
3The real battle often takes place in the mind, where a contaminated belief gives birth to contaminated behavior
He points to Paul's own confession in Romans 7 that he does what he doesn't want to do, and describes the internal narrative of shame and defeat many believers cycle through — feeling too broken or too sinful to change.
4
4The word of God is alive and active, exposing thoughts, correcting, and training us in righteousness
He cites Hebrews 4:12 and 2 Timothy 3:16 to argue that scripture is not just ink on a page but God-breathed and powerful, able to transform the mind, produce conviction, and grow spiritual fruit.
5
5Jesus in the wilderness models exactly how to fight temptation with the sword of scripture
Working through Matthew 4:1-11, Pastor Mark shows Jesus was led into the wilderness hungry and vulnerable, and each time Satan tempted Him He responded with 'the scriptures say' rather than arguing on His own authority.
6
6The enemy attacks appetite, tempting us to believe what we want right now matters more than what God has said
He connects Satan's temptation to turn stones to bread with everyday temptations to justify sin because it feels good or feels deserved, and shows Jesus countering with 'people do not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'
7
7The enemy attacks our need for approval, but we are already approved by God before we do anything
He recounts Jesus already having the Father's approval at His baptism before any ministry, and shares his own story of feeling hollow after preaching to 3,000 people because he was still trying to prove himself rather than resting in God's approval.
8
8The enemy attacks our ambition, offering shortcuts to glory that require compromising worship of God alone
He walks through Satan offering Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship, and Jesus refusing with scripture, showing the pattern of resisting every temptation by speaking God's word until the devil flees.
9
9Resisting the devil with God's word, backed by humility, causes him to flee, but hearing the word without doing it is self-deception
He cites James 4:7 on resisting the devil and James's warning about being hearers only, stressing that scripture must be applied in real moments of temptation, not just memorized or tattooed on skin.

The enemy loves to place opposition in the places that God's called you to occupy

A story from life

Story of the preacher's wife's brain tumor, infertility, fostering, and adoption of their children

A story from life

Story of wrestling with fear before becoming a foster parent and sensing Romans 8:15 in prayer

Application

Pastor Mark's charge is to pick up the sword — the word of God — and actually fight with it, not just carry it.

Spend real time in scripture
Let the word do its work of transforming your mind, convicting your spirit, and building spiritual strength and fruit, rather than treating it as background knowledge.
Speak scripture back when tempted
When the enemy whispers lies about your appetite, approval, or ambition, respond the way Jesus did — with 'the scriptures say' — instead of arguing from your own strength.
Rest in God's approval instead of chasing it
Remember you were loved and approved by God before you ever accomplished anything, so stop performing for validation from people, achievements, or even ministry success.
Do the word, not just hear it
Apply scripture in the actual moments of temptation and discouragement this week rather than merely memorizing verses or having them tattooed without living them out.
Confess and believe in Jesus
If you've been one foot in, one foot out, settle it now by confessing with your mouth and believing in your heart that Jesus is Lord.

Day 1

Related passage

Before Pastor Mark said a single word about armor or battle, he started somewhere that might feel like a slow start: identity. The first three chapters of Ephesians establish who you already are in Christ — chosen, adopted, redeemed — purely by grace, not by anything you've pulled off. Only after that does Paul turn to how we live. Pastor Mark put it simply: proper belief always comes before proper behavior. That order matters. So much of our struggle to change comes from trying to behave our way into an identity we're actually meant to receive as a gift. Today isn't about fighting anything yet. It's about letting the truth settle that you were adopted before you achieved. If you've spent years feeling like a spiritual project that never quite works, this is a place to breathe. You are not on probation with God. The behavior chapters of your life are real and they're coming, but they grow out of belief, not the other way around. Start the week by simply receiving that you belong to Him. Everything else this week builds on this foundation, so don't rush past it. Let the gift come first.

For reflection

Where have I been trying to behave my way into an identity Christ already gives me by grace?

Pray

Thank God for the identity He gave you before you ever accomplished anything, and ask Him to let it sink in.

Day 2

Pastor Mark walked through the armor of God piece by piece and pointed out something easy to miss: nearly every piece is defensive. The belt, the breastplate, the shield, the helmet — they protect. Only one item is named as an offensive weapon: the sword of the Spirit, which Paul explicitly calls the word of God. And Paul is clear the battle is spiritual, not against flesh and blood. That reframes a lot. The person who frustrated you, the circumstance that wore you down — those may be real, but they aren't the actual front line. There's more going on than what you can see. The invitation here isn't to become suspicious of everyone around you; it's to stop swinging at the wrong target and to notice you've been handed a real weapon. A sword you carry but never draw does nothing. Pastor Mark's charge was to actually pick it up and fight with it, not just own one. Today, sit with the strangeness that God arms His people mostly to stand firm, and hands them one thing to fight back with — His own words. That's not a small gift. It's the difference between surviving a battle and standing in it.

For reflection

Which piece of this armor am I most tempted to leave off, and why?

Pray

Ask God to help you see where the real battle is, rather than aiming at flesh and blood.

Day 3

Pastor Mark named something a lot of us feel but rarely say out loud: the battle often happens in the mind. He pointed to Paul's own confession — that he does the very thing he doesn't want to do — as proof that even a great apostle knew the frustration of a divided heart. And he described the internal loop many of us cycle through: I'm too broken, too sinful, too far gone to really change. He called it contaminated belief giving birth to contaminated behavior. Notice Paul isn't writing this to sort himself outside the family of God. He's writing it as a beloved son who feels the war and keeps going. That's important, because the enemy's favorite lie isn't usually a bold one; it's the quiet narrative that runs in the background telling you nothing will ever be different. Fear and struggle aren't character flaws — they're human, and Paul says so plainly. But a contaminated belief left unchallenged shapes what you do next. So the work today is honest attention: what story keeps playing in your mind? Naming it is the first step to answering it with something truer, which is where the rest of this week is headed.

For reflection

What quiet, defeating story about myself keeps looping in my mind?

Pray

Pray for honesty about the internal narrative that has been shaping your choices.

Day 4

"For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires" (NLT). Pastor Mark leaned on this verse, alongside 2 Timothy 3:16, to make a case that scripture is not just ink on a page or background knowledge you accumulate. It's God-breathed and living, able to transform the mind, produce conviction, and grow real spiritual fruit. That changes how we approach it. If the word is alive, then spending time in it isn't a box to check — it's letting something active do its work on you. Pastor Mark's charge was to spend real time here, not to treat verses as trivia you can quote but have never let cut you. There's a difference between reading to be informed and reading to be exposed and formed. The second one is slower and more uncomfortable, because a living word notices thoughts and desires we'd rather leave alone. But that same edge is what trains us in righteousness. Today, don't rush your reading. Let a living word actually look at you. That's what makes the sword worth carrying into tomorrow's fight.

For reflection

Am I reading scripture to accumulate knowledge, or to let it actually work on me?

Pray

Ask God to let His living word expose and reshape something in you this week.

Day 5

Pastor Mark showed how Jesus, led into the wilderness and genuinely hungry, gives us the pattern for fighting temptation. Satan's first attack aimed at appetite — turn these stones to bread. It's the temptation to believe that what I want right now matters more than what God has said. And notice what Jesus did not do: He didn't argue from His own willpower or debate on His own authority. He answered, "People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" (NLT). He spoke the scriptures. This is the everyday shape of it. The temptation to justify something because it feels good, or feels deserved, or feels earned after a hard day — that's the appetite attack wearing ordinary clothes. Pastor Mark's point was that we resist the same way Jesus did: not by white-knuckling it, but by speaking God's word back into the moment. That's harder than it sounds, because appetite is loud and immediate. But it also means you're not left fighting from your own depleted strength. You have something to say back. The word you spent time in on the quiet days becomes the word you can draw in the loud ones.

For reflection

Where does 'what I want right now' most often drown out what God has said?

Pray

Pray for a specific verse to speak back the next time appetite tries to justify a compromise.

Day 6

The second wilderness attack went after approval. Pastor Mark drew attention to the timing: at His baptism, before Jesus had performed a single miracle or preached a single sermon, the Father already said He was loved and well pleased. The approval came first. So when Satan dares Jesus to prove Himself by leaping from the temple, he's poking at a need Jesus doesn't have — because Jesus already has the Father's approval and rests in it. Pastor Mark got vulnerable here, admitting he once felt hollow after preaching to thousands because he was still trying to prove himself instead of resting in an approval he already had. That's a strangely freeing confession, because it names how even good things — achievements, applause, ministry success — can become validation we chase. You were loved and approved before you ever accomplished anything. Let that undo the performing, gently. This isn't a test you pass by never wanting affirmation; wanting to be seen is human. It's a slow relearning that the applause you're chasing was already spoken over you at the start. When approval is settled, temptation loses one of its favorite handholds. You stop needing to prove what God has already declared.

For reflection

Whose approval have I been performing for, and what would change if I rested in God's?

Pray

Pray to rest in the approval God gave you before you did anything to earn it.

Day 7

The final attack went after ambition — Satan offering all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus would just bow and take the shortcut. Jesus refused, again with scripture, and Matthew tells us the devil left Him. James 4:7 names that same pattern: resist the devil, backed by humility, and he flees. But Pastor Mark ended on the sharper edge of James — hearing the word without doing it is self-deception. So as this week's study ends, the real question is about tomorrow, and the ordinary week after it. The verses you sat with only become a sword when you draw them in the actual moment — the compromise that promises a shortcut, the discouragement on a Tuesday, the appetite that flares up when you're tired. Don't let this stay a week of good reading. Pick the moment you already know is coming and decide now what you'll speak back. And if you've been one foot in and one foot out, Pastor Mark's closing charge was plain: settle it — confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord. The sword only fights in the hand of someone who's actually holding it. Go pick it up.

For reflection

What one real moment this coming week will I meet with scripture instead of my own strength?

Pray

Ask God for the courage to do the word this week, not just hear it.
