Key points
1Community is where belonging happens, not just believing
Pastor Tyshone tells the story of his mother visiting nine or ten churches after her divorce before settling on the church LV, where he was later saved and called to ministry. He explains that his mother understood the family needed more than salvation — they needed to belong somewhere.
faith does not end with belief. It moves towards belonging
2The early church devoted themselves to community as a commitment, not a convenience
Reading Acts 2:42-47, Pastor Tyshone points out that after the believers were saved, they devoted themselves to fellowship, breaking bread, and sharing possessions rather than scattering back to private life. He contrasts this with his own resistance to going to church on his day off, recalling his wife pushing him to stay committed even when he was tired.
community is a commitment. It's not a convenience
A story from life
On his honeymoon weekend off, the preacher dragged his wife and a friend to hear a beloved preacher, only to find a different preacher in the pulpit — and felt the Holy Spirit convict him for valuing the communicator over the community.
3Prioritizing church costs something, but it's worth it
He walks through the roughly thirty to forty years between Acts and Hebrews, noting that persecution made Christianity costly and caused people to drift from gathering together. He argues the cost today isn't usually life, but time, and that giving God's people time is how we stay devoted.
It was never just about the communicator holding the mic. It was about the congregants in the room
Prioritizing God's house is always gonna come to a cost
A story from life
At a church vision banquet, a man named Eric Willis helped the young preacher learn to tie a tie — and later became a mentor who spoke into his finances, accountability, and calling.
4God grows people by connecting them to other people
Pastor Tyshone tells the story of Eric Willis teaching him to tie a tie as a boy, and later becoming someone who spoke into his life about finances and other struggles he didn't want to hear about. He says growth happens by listening to the stories of the people around you, not just from the person on stage.
5You cannot separate love for God from love for His people
Using the analogy of marriage — that he and his wife are one, so someone can't claim to love him while disregarding her — he argues the same is true of Jesus and the church. He insists you cannot do life alone, no matter how self-sufficient you feel.
6What we cannot sustain alone, we can sustain together
He reads Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, on two being better than one, two keeping each other warm, and a triple-braided cord not being easily broken, explaining the third cord as a trusted relationship in the church alongside a marriage. He tells of a moment in 2021 when a stranger in the lobby, prompted by God, told him he would last — proof that God uses people in the seats, not just the preacher on stage.
What we cannot sustain alone, we can sustain together
God doesn't just wanna use the person on the stage, he wants to use the people in the seats
A story from life
After praying to "last" in ministry, the preacher went outside after a service and a woman told him God had put him on her heart the night before and that he would last — a moment the preacher describes as God using a person in the seats rather than the person on the stage.
A story from life
At a conference, the preacher unknowingly struck up a conversation with a well-known Super Bowl–winning football player who credited his parents' faithfulness to the local church — not sports — for the foundation of his life.
A story from life
The preacher's mother moved the family from Memphis to Las Vegas after a difficult marriage ended, visited nine or 10 churches over several weeks, and ultimately chose a church that became the community where the preacher gave his life to Christ and was called to ministry.
Application
Pastor Tyshone frames the charge as choosing community: don't just come to church, belong to it.
Commit to church even when inconvenient
Treat church attendance as a commitment rather than something you do only when it's easy or you feel like it, the way Pastor Tyshone's wife pushed him to keep showing up.
Give God's people your time
Recognize that prioritizing God's house costs time you'd otherwise give to games, shows, or other distractions, and give that time to God and His people this week.
Ask people around you for their story
Slow down after service instead of rushing to your car, and ask at least two people to tell you their story so you can connect and realize you're not alone in your struggles.
Stay committed to church in 2026
Make church relationships a personal priority for the next season, especially if you're a single parent — bringing your child to church consistently matters even when other things go wrong.
Take it into your week
