Big Idea

Every David needs a Samuel — gifting without guidance usually ends in disaster, so every believer needs a mentor who can call the greatness out of them.

God places mentors in our lives to see what others miss, to be a refuge in hard seasons, and to speak truth we need to hear. Pastor Daniel shows through David and Samuel's relationship that our calling isn't dependent on our family of origin, but it is sustained through godly mentorship marked by integrity, wisdom, and backbone.

Key points

1
1Gifting without guidance usually ends in disaster
Pastor Daniel introduces the David and Samuel relationship in 1 Samuel 16, noting Samuel's fear of mentoring again after Saul failed to listen to him. He argues gifting can become dangerous without guidance, and that God doesn't need perfect mentors, just willing ones.
2
2David's family overlooked him, but his calling wasn't dependent on that
Working through the anointing scene, Pastor Daniel notes David was hidden on the fringes by Jesse, likely due to family dysfunction, and never even brought in to be presented to Samuel. He tells the church that undealt-with father wounds shaped David's later failures, but that our calling is not contingent on our family seeing our potential.
3
3Mentors can see what other people miss
Samuel saw greatness in David that Jesse overlooked. Pastor Daniel illustrates this with Tom Brady being passed over by five quarterbacks in the 2000 NFL draft until one quarterback coach argued for him, and shares his own story of a youth pastor who told him he had a gift to teach.
4
4Mentors are a refuge in the storms of life
When Saul tried to kill David, David ran to Samuel at Ramah rather than facing the crisis alone, shown in 1 Samuel 19. Pastor Daniel notes that who we run to in a storm determines whether it makes us bitter or better, and that a mentor creates a safe place to just be human.
5
5A godly mentor needs integrity, wisdom, and backbone
Pastor Daniel lists three qualities to look for: integrity (the same person on Sunday as on Friday, citing Paul's charge to imitate him as he imitates Christ), wisdom gained through lived experience rather than mere knowledge (Job 12:12), and backbone to tell hard truths, as Samuel did to Saul in 1 Samuel 13.
6
6Even without a human mentor, the Holy Spirit mentors us
Pastor Daniel closes by pointing to 1 John 2, saying one of the Holy Spirit's jobs is to develop us into what Jesus taught, so no one is ever truly without a mentor even if they lack a human one right now.

A story from life

Daniel recounts a tense encounter while working at AT&T that led a national sales trainer to offer him mentorship, which he says changed the financial future of his family.

Application

Pastor Daniel's charge is that every David needs a Samuel, and every Samuel also needs a David.

Seek out a mentor who sees your potential
Ask God for someone a season ahead of you who can call out the greatness in you, even if your family never affirmed it.
Run to a mentor, not away, in the storm
When life falls apart, choose to bring it to a trusted mentor who lets you just be human rather than facing it bitter and alone.
More seasoned believers, invest in younger families
Pastor Daniel asks those further along to pour into the young families filling the church so their marriages and lives can mature.
Look for integrity, wisdom, and backbone in a mentor
Choose someone whose character matches their success, who has lived wisdom rather than just knowledge, and who will tell you hard truths.
Turn to the Holy Spirit if you lack a human mentor
Pray and ask God to bring a mentor into your life, and remember the Holy Spirit is already at work developing you into who Jesus calls you to be.

Day 1

When Samuel arrived in Bethlehem, everyone looked at the obvious candidates — the tall ones, the strong ones, the sons standing front and center. But God kept saying no. The one He had chosen was still out in the field tending sheep, not even invited to the lineup. Pastor Daniel made the point plainly: mentors can see what other people miss. You don't need everyone to recognize your potential. You just need somebody — one person, a season ahead of you — who sees what God has already placed inside you. That's how it worked for David. Samuel saw him, anointed him, and the trajectory of his life changed. Maybe you've felt overlooked, passed over, left in the field. The encouragement here isn't that you have to prove yourself louder. It's that God still sees, and He often makes His seeing visible through one faithful person He sends your way. If you've never had that person, this week is a good time to start asking Him for one. The Spirit who moved Samuel still moves today.

For reflection

Where have you felt overlooked, and how might God be inviting you to trust that He still sees you?

Pray

Ask God to send one person who can see what He has already placed in you.

Day 2

David was the youngest, the one left to watch the sheep while his brothers got cleaned up for the prophet. His own family didn't think to call him in. And yet the oil was poured over his head, and the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him from that day forward. Pastor Daniel said it directly: your family upbringing does not define the calling God has placed on your life. Where you came from, what your household believed about you, the labels you were handed early — none of those have the final word. God's call does. Some of us carry quiet assumptions about our ceiling because of the home we grew up in. But the same God who reached past Jesse's expectations to anoint a shepherd boy can reach past whatever has been spoken over you. This isn't a promise that the past disappears. It's a reminder that the past doesn't get to write your future. The calling started in a field, not a palace — and God was already at work.

For reflection

What belief about your potential did you inherit, and does it match what God says about you?

Pray

Pray for freedom from any label your past placed on your future.

Day 3

Related passage

When Saul turned on him and David's life fell apart, David ran. But notice where he ran — to Samuel, the mentor who had anointed him years before. He didn't run to a hiding place first; he ran to a person. Pastor Daniel said mentors are designed to be a refuge in the middle of a storm, and that who you run to when life falls apart shapes whether trials make you better or bitter. That's worth sitting with. In a crisis, our instincts take over, and our instincts reveal where our trust actually lives. Do you have a person of godly character you'd run toward when everything shakes? If not, that's not a failure — it's an invitation to build that kind of relationship before the storm comes, not after. Community isn't an accessory to the Christian life. It's part of how God sustains the calling He began in you. Storms come for everyone. The difference is often whether you weather them alone or alongside someone wiser who points you back to God.

For reflection

When life falls apart, who do you actually run to first — and what does that reveal?

Pray

Ask God to build relationships now that can be refuge later.

Day 4

"Imitate me, just as I imitate Christ," Paul wrote. It's a bold thing to say, and it only works if your life can bear the weight of being watched. Pastor Daniel named integrity as the first mark of a godly mentor: consistency of character whether seen or unseen. The person worth following is the same in public and in private, on the platform and at the kitchen table. This cuts two ways. If you're looking for a mentor, look for someone whose private life and public life line up — not perfection, but consistency. And if you're someone others might one day follow, integrity is the foundation that makes your influence trustworthy. Paul didn't point to himself ultimately; he pointed past himself to Christ. That's the heart of real mentoring — not building a following, but pointing people to Jesus by the way you live. Integrity isn't flashy. It's the quiet faithfulness of doing the right thing when no one is keeping score. And over time, that kind of life becomes something others can safely imitate.

For reflection

Where is there a gap between your public self and your private self that God is inviting you to close?

Pray

Pray for integrity that holds steady whether or not anyone is watching.

Day 5

"Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old," Job said. Pastor Daniel drew a careful line here: wisdom isn't merely knowledge accumulated — it's knowledge lived out over time. There's a difference between someone who has read about marriage and someone who has stayed faithful for thirty years, between someone who can quote about suffering and someone who has walked through it without losing their faith. That's why a mentor should be a season ahead of you — far enough down the road to have actually traveled the terrain you're facing. We live in an age that prizes fast information, but wisdom can't be downloaded. It's earned slowly, tested in real life, proven over years. This is part of why God puts older, seasoned believers in our path. Their gray hairs aren't a liability; they're a library. If you have access to someone like that, don't waste it — ask questions, listen, learn. And if you're becoming that someone, your lived experience is a gift God intends you to pass on.

For reflection

Whose lived-out wisdom could you intentionally learn from this season?

Pray

Ask God for the humility to seek wisdom from those further down the road.

Day 6

Samuel didn't flatter Saul. When Saul disobeyed, Samuel told him plainly that his kingdom would not endure — hard words, but necessary ones. Pastor Daniel called this backbone: the courage to tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. A mentor without backbone is just a cheerleader, and cheerleaders won't save you from yourself. We naturally gather voices that affirm us, but the most loving people in our lives are often the ones willing to risk the relationship by telling us the truth. That kind of honesty stings in the moment and protects us in the long run. Solomon would later write that the wounds of a friend are trustworthy. So ask yourself: do you have someone in your life with permission to tell you the hard thing? And can you receive it without defensiveness when they do? Truth spoken in love is one of God's great gifts. It's also a gift we're called to give — gently, humbly, but honestly — to those coming up behind us.

For reflection

Have you given anyone permission to tell you the hard truth, and how do you respond when they do?

Pray

Pray for the courage to both receive and speak truth in love.

Day 7

Maybe you've read all week longing for a mentor and still don't have one. Hold on to this: John writes that the anointing you received from God remains in you, and His Spirit teaches you about all things. Even without a human guide, the Holy Spirit Himself mentors believers, developing us into Christlikeness through God's Word. That's not a consolation prize — it's the deepest reality underneath every good human mentor. So make a mentor a real prayer request, and keep showing up to Scripture where the Spirit is already at work in you. But don't stop there. Pastor Daniel framed a two-sided calling: seek someone a season ahead of you, and turn around and pour into the generation behind you. Gifting alone isn't enough; community is how potential becomes purpose. The calling God begins in you, He sustains through people. So get into the Word, get into community, get onto a serving team or into a crew — and watch what God grows. Samuel saw David. Then David, in time, led others. That's the pattern, and you're somewhere in it right now.

For reflection

Which is your next step this week — seeking someone ahead of you, or investing in someone behind you?

Pray

Ask the Holy Spirit to mentor you through His Word and to show you who to pour into next.
