Key points
1Our words are one of the clearest signs of what's really going on in our hearts
Pastor Daniel opens James 3:1-2, noting James measures a mature or 'complete' Christian by whether they've learned to control their tongue. He points out that of all the marks of maturity he'd expect, controlling speech wouldn't make his own top-five list, yet James puts it front and center as a window into the soul.
our words, those six to 800,000,000 that we will say, our words will bring life or death
2We dismiss our words as harmless because we can't see the damage they cause
He tells the story of a 19th-century doctor who couldn't prove why handwashing between autopsies and deliveries saved lives, since bacteria hadn't been discovered yet, and was mocked into an asylum before being vindicated decades later. Just like unseen bacteria, our words are doing real damage to people even when we can't visibly trace the effect.

3A small spark of language can set a whole life on fire
Walking through James 3:3-6, he unpacks the images of a bit steering a horse, a rudder turning a ship, and a spark igniting a forest, tying it to the real 2018 California ranch fire that began with one hammer strike and caused $10 billion in damage. He warns that words spoken in anger can start fires we can't put back out, and that hurtful language is often animated by something darker than we realize.
There's no neutral. There's no neutral language
our words, whether we realize it or not, they create the worlds that we live in

4We can tame wild animals but we cannot tame our own tongue
From James 3:7-10, he notes humanity has learned to control almost anything in creation, yet the tongue remains restless and can bless God and curse people made in His image in the same breath. He connects this to the Japanese water-crystal study, showing spoken words affect physical structure, and reminds the room our bodies and brains are mostly water, so words are literally producing something in the people around us.
you cannot fix a problem that you're not willing to admit is there

5We must first agree, and admit, that our words are genuinely powerful
He names the practical shapes of deadly language: gossip disguised as prayer requests, chronic complaining, and careless jokes that wound while hiding behind 'I was just joking,' citing Philippians 2 and Proverbs 26. Then he names life-giving language: generous compliments, encouragement that puts courage into people (especially husbands, per 1 Thessalonians 5), and correction offered from love rather than anger, tying it back to James 1's call to be slow to speak and slow to anger.
A story from life
Pastor Daniel's grandmother's wisdom: be careful of anyone willing to gossip around you, because they will gossip about you when you're not there.
A story from life
Pastor Daniel recalls his grandmother pulling him aside at family gatherings to tell him he was her favourite grandchild — a moment he later learned she shared with every one of her grandchildren.
6Our words reveal who we really are, and only God can change the heart behind them
Drawing on Luke 6:45, he explains James's point that we can't fix our language by willpower because words flow from the heart, and only God can do that inner surgery. He offers a two-part prayer from Psalm 51 and Psalm 141 — asking God to create a clean heart and to guard the lips — as the practical way forward.
What you say flows from what is in your heart
7Isaiah's vision of the burning coal pictures the purifying touch we need
He retells Isaiah 6, where Isaiah cries out that he is a man of unclean lips and an angel touches his mouth with a burning coal from the altar, removing his guilt. Pastor Daniel applies this as the invitation available in the room that morning: the same purifying presence that met Isaiah can touch the parts of our hearts we're ashamed of and begin to restore us from the inside out.
they that generational curse, it had power until it met you and now, in the name of Jesus, you get to be a chain breaker
A story from life
Pastor Daniel recounts his young son loudly asking why a witch was bagging their groceries at a grocery store.
Application
Pastor Daniel frames the ask as a two-part prayer: create in me a clean heart, and guard my lips.
Admit that your words are powerful
Before anything changes, agree and acknowledge that your language genuinely matters and is producing life or death in the people around you — you can't fix what you won't admit is there.
Cut out gossip, complaining, and careless jokes
Stop disguising gossip as prayer requests, drop the habit of complaining that erodes the blessing you're in, and be careful with jokes that wound even when you say you were 'just joking.'
Be liberal with compliments and encouragement
Look for chances to genuinely compliment people and put courage into them, especially spouses and children who rarely hear it, following 1 Thessalonians 5's call to build each other up.
Have corrective conversations from love, not anger
When you need to address an issue with your kids or spouse, cool off first so you can speak from a posture of love rather than in the heat of anger.
Pray the two-part prayer for a clean heart and guarded lips
Use Psalm 51's 'create in me a clean heart' and Psalm 141's 'guard my lips' as a regular prayer, inviting God to purify your heart and filter your words before conversations, especially hard ones.
Take it into your week
