Big Idea

In the busyness of the Christmas season, we keep Jesus at the center by waiting for His arrival, celebrating His birth, and following His example of sacrifice and service.

Christmas can easily get swallowed by chaos and busyness until Jesus gets forgotten in the middle of it. Pastor Daniel encourages us that God is worth waiting for, that Jesus's birth is the incarnation that changes everything, and that real peace only comes when we imitate the sacrificial, serving life Jesus modeled.

Key points

1
1Jesus's star power came from serving, not stardom
Pastor Daniel points to Balaam's prophecy in Numbers 24:17 that a star would rise from Jacob, given fourteen hundred years before Jesus's birth. He notes that unlike Hollywood stars who build a following through fame, Jesus constantly pushed crowds away and let His star power come from sacrifice and service rather than stardom.
2
2Wait for His arrival
Pastor Daniel explains that Advent literally means expectant waiting, and that Israel waited four hundred years for the Messiah while thinking God had left them. He admits he's terrible at waiting himself and warns that taking control instead of trusting God's timing has led to some of his worst decisions, quoting Isaiah 40:31 to remind listeners that those who trust the Lord find new strength.
3
3Celebrate His birth
Pastor Daniel walks through Matthew 1:23 and the meaning of Emmanuel, God with us, calling the incarnation the most important event in human history because God became one of us rather than leaving humanity a list of rules to climb toward Him. He shares his family's Christmas morning tradition of reading the Christmas story together and describes how his mother's nativity scenes always centered around the baby in the manger as a picture of keeping Jesus central.
4
4Making Jesus the focus produces peace
Pastor Daniel contrasts the anxiety, comparison, and frustration many feel during the holidays with the peace available through Christ, citing Philippians 4:7 that God's peace guards hearts and minds. He insists gifts and appearances, like the commercial image of a car with a bow, can never produce that peace the way Jesus's presence can.
5
5Follow His example
Pastor Daniel teaches that Jesus came not just to be adored but to be imitated, referencing Mark 10:45 where the Son of Man came to serve and give His life as a ransom, and 1 John 2 which says those who live in God should live as Jesus did. He argues that a sacrificial, service-focused, others-oriented life is the counterintuitive path to real purpose and peace, unlike the world's promise that buying more things brings happiness.

Application

Pastor Daniel frames it as three simple ways to keep Jesus at the center of your home this Christmas.

Wait for His arrival
If you're in a season of waiting financially, relationally, or physically, don't rush ahead and take control yourself; trust that God shows up at the right time.
Celebrate His birth
Make the birth of Jesus a big deal in your house this week, whether through reading the Christmas story as a family or centering your traditions on the incarnation rather than just presents and pageantry.
Follow His example
Ask God where you can begin to live a life of sacrifice and service like Jesus did, being obedient in places you haven't been before.

Take it into your week

Day 1

Long before a single shepherd looked up on that night in Bethlehem, God had already promised a star rising out of Jacob. Pastor Daniel reminded us that Jesus was prophesied centuries in advance — His coming was no accident or afterthought, but the long-laid plan of a God who keeps His word. What strikes me most is the kind of star He turned out to be. We tend to think of star power as stardom: applause, spotlight, the best seat in the room. But Jesus' brilliance came through sacrifice and service, not celebrity. In a season that loves glitter and glow, that's a quiet reset. The brightest light in human history chose a feeding trough, not a throne. As Christmas approaches, it's worth asking what kind of "shine" you're chasing. The world hands us comparison and applause as the measure of a life well lived. Jesus offers something steadier and lower to the ground — a life poured out for others. The star God promised still points the same direction it always did: toward Him. Let it lead you there again this week, not to a performance, but to a Person.

For reflection

Where am I tempted to measure my worth by being noticed rather than by serving like Jesus?

Pray

Ask God to fix your eyes on the kind of light Jesus is — and to lead you toward Him this season.

Day 2

Waiting is woven into the Christian life, whether we like it or not. Pastor Daniel pointed back to the four hundred silent years before the Messiah came — a wait long enough to test the patience of generations. And yet God's timing proved trustworthy. Isaiah promises that those who trust in the Lord will find new strength; they will soar, run, and walk without fainting. Notice the order of things: strength comes through trusting, not through taking control. In whatever season of waiting you find yourself — for an answer, a healing, a relationship, a door to open — the temptation is always to grab the wheel. Hard waits are real, and the ache of them is nothing to be ashamed of. But God invites us to lean on Him in the meantime rather than forcing an outcome ahead of His timing. The same God who was never late with the Messiah is not late with you. Waiting, done in trust, isn't wasted time; it's where new strength quietly grows. This Advent season is itself a kind of practiced waiting — a chance to let the discipline form patience and trust in you.

For reflection

What am I waiting on right now, and what would it look like to trust God's timing instead of forcing my own?

Pray

Pray for renewed strength and trust in the season of waiting you're carrying right now.

Day 3

"They will call Him Immanuel, which means 'God is with us.'" Pastor Daniel called the incarnation the greatest miracle in human history — God becoming one of us. It's easy to rush past that word "with." God didn't shout instructions from a safe distance. He came near. He took on skin, hunger, weariness, and tears. He entered the very mess we long to escape. In the crush of the Christmas season — the lists, the spending, the noise — this is the truth worth protecting at all costs: God is with us. That changes how we celebrate. The center of Christmas isn't the pageantry or the gifts under the tree; it's Emmanuel. Pastor Daniel urged us to make the birth of Jesus a deliberate, named priority in our homes — to read the Christmas story together and let "God with us" be the headline, not the footnote. Try it this week. Gather the people you love and read it aloud. Let the wonder of God-with-us reshape an ordinary evening. Living this truth out can be as simple as making room for it on purpose.

For reflection

How can I make "God with us" the named centerpiece of my home this Christmas, rather than an afterthought?

Pray

Ask God for a fresh sense of wonder at the incarnation — and for a concrete way to center your home on Emmanuel.

Day 4

The season promises peace — it's on every card and carol — but the world can't actually deliver it. Pastor Daniel anchored his whole message in this promise: when Jesus is truly at the center, a peace that exceeds anything we can understand will guard our hearts and minds. Notice that this peace doesn't come from circumstances calming down. It comes from Christ being central. It's described as a guard — something that stands watch over the anxious places in us, even when life refuses to settle. Anxiety and pressure are real, and feeling them doesn't make you a failure of faith; it makes you human. But the invitation here is to keep bringing those heavy things to Jesus rather than carrying them alone. The peace He gives isn't the absence of trouble; it's His presence in the middle of it. As the busyness mounts this week, the question isn't whether you can manufacture calm. It's whether Jesus is at the center, where He belongs. Put Him there again — through prayer, through His Word, through honest dependence — and let His peace stand guard.

For reflection

What would it look like to bring my anxious thoughts to Jesus today instead of trying to manage them alone?

Pray

Pray that Jesus would take His place at the center, and that His peace would guard your heart and mind.

Day 5

"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many." Pastor Daniel made a striking point: Jesus did not come merely to be adored — He came to be imitated. We're good at admiring Jesus from a distance, especially at Christmas, when nativity scenes invite quiet wonder. But adoration that never becomes imitation falls short of what He asks. The same Jesus we sing about chose the towel and the cross. He measured greatness not by who served Him but by whom He served. That reorients everything in a season that pushes us toward comfort and comparison. Pastor Daniel invited us to ask God where we can begin following Jesus' example more fully in the coming year — leaning into sacrifice and service rather than chasing what the season sells. You don't have to wait for January. Look around today: a neighbor, a family member, someone overlooked. Serving them with your time, your attention, your resources is how adoration becomes imitation. That's the path Jesus walked, and He invites us to walk it with Him.

For reflection

Where is one specific place I can move from admiring Jesus to imitating Him through service this week?

Pray

Ask God to show you one concrete way to serve someone the way Jesus served, starting this week.

Day 6

"Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did." It's a plain sentence with deep roots. Pastor Daniel drew out the through-line of the whole message here: a life centered on Jesus is a life that begins to look like His — sacrificial, serving, and oriented toward others. This isn't a test to pass or fail, and it isn't about earning anything; salvation is His gift, freely given. It's an invitation to let our daily lives match what we claim to believe. The direction of the heart matters more than the perfection of the record. To "live in God" is to let His way of life become ours, one ordinary choice at a time. As the new year approaches, this is a fitting place to pray honestly. Where do my days actually look like the Jesus I follow? Where could they look more like Him? Not as a burden, but as a glad becoming. The good news is that we don't pursue this alone or on our own strength — we grow into it in His presence, in His Word, and alongside others who are walking the same road.

For reflection

Where is the direction of my daily life already taking shape after Jesus, and where do I sense Him inviting me to grow?

Pray

Pray for honesty about where your daily life reflects Jesus, and willingness to grow where He's inviting you.

Day 7

This week we traced three intentional practices Pastor Daniel offered to re-center the season on Jesus: embracing the discipline of waiting, making the incarnation the centerpiece of our celebrations, and modeling our daily lives after Jesus' sacrifice and service. Paul's words in Philippians gather it all together. He calls us to rejoice, to set aside anxious grasping and bring everything to God, and to fix our minds on what is true and good. And right in the middle of it stands the promise that has guarded this whole week: a peace beyond understanding. Look back over the days. The prophesied star who shone through service. The wait that trust turned into strength. Emmanuel, God with us. The peace that guards. The Jesus we don't just adore but imitate. The life that, claiming to live in God, begins to look like His. None of these are seasonal decorations to pack away in January. They're a way of walking with Jesus all year. As Christmas arrives, let Him be genuinely at the center — in your waiting, your home, and your service. That's where the peace the season promises is actually found.

For reflection

Of the three practices this week — waiting in trust, centering on the incarnation, serving like Jesus — which one is God inviting me to carry into the new year?

Pray

Thank God for drawing you near as Emmanuel, and ask Him to keep Jesus at the center long after the season ends.

2
Isaiah 40:31 says those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. Why do you think waiting is so woven into the life of faith, and what does it look like to trust God's timing instead of taking control?
3
Matthew 1:23 names Jesus 'Emmanuel — God with us.' What does it mean to call the incarnation the greatest miracle in human history, and how might that reshape the way we celebrate Christmas together?
4
Pastor Daniel encouraged us to make the birth of Jesus a deliberate, named priority at home — reading the Christmas story together and centering the season on 'God with us.' What are some practical ways a household could put that into practice?
5
Mark 10:45 and 1 John 2:6 say Jesus came not only to be adored but to be imitated — to serve and to give His life. How might following His example of sacrifice and service change the way we relate to the people around us?
