The big idea

Before God mobilizes us to be sent, He purifies us — and commissioning begins not with ability but with availability.

God wants to send every believer on mission, but sending only follows seeing God rightly, seeing ourselves honestly, and being purified by what Jesus did on the cross. Isaiah's vision in the temple shows the pattern: encounter God's holiness, recognize our own brokenness, receive cleansing, then respond, "Here I am, send me."

Isaiah's commissioning began at a moment of cultural and political uncertainty.

Pastor Daniel notes that Isaiah saw the Lord the year King Uzziah died, a moment when Israel's future felt uncertain after a good king's reign ended in catastrophic failure. He draws a parallel to today's political and cultural unrest, saying God wants to raise up another prophetic generation in the middle of that same kind of chaos.

Seeing God accurately is the starting point for being used by Him.

Isaiah sees God seated on a lofty throne, robe filling the temple, surrounded by seraphim crying 'holy, holy, holy.' Pastor Daniel explains that this vision of God's otherness and majesty is what every person needs before they can ask God to use their life.

Seeing God rightly leads to seeing ourselves honestly.

The moment Isaiah glimpses God's holiness he cries out that he is doomed, a sinful man with unclean lips. Pastor Daniel says this always happens: an accurate view of God exposes an honest view of ourselves and the gap between His perfection and our brokenness.

God does His deepest work at our place of greatest weakness.

Isaiah's perceived disqualification — his unclean lips — becomes the very tool God uses, since Isaiah becomes a prophet who speaks for God. Pastor Daniel applies this to the congregation's own fasting experience, saying the weaknesses and coping mechanisms exposed over the twenty-one days are not disqualifying but exactly what God wants to redeem.

Purification always comes before mobilization, and today that purification is the cross.

An angel touches Isaiah's lips with a coal from the altar to remove his guilt; Pastor Daniel says we no longer need a coal because Jesus became sin for us so we could become His righteousness. He connects this to baptism as the symbolic dying to the old self and being raised to new life.

Take it into your week

Application

Bring your weaknesses honestly to God
Whatever coping mechanisms, brokenness, or shortcomings surfaced during the fast, don't hide them — trust God with them so He can purify and even redeem them for ministry.
Accept the purification Jesus offers
Recognize that Jesus became sin so we could become righteous, and receive that free gift of grace rather than trying to clean yourself up first.
Get baptized if you haven't
Take the step of baptism next weekend as the symbolic death to your old self and being raised to new life in Christ, following through on saying yes to Jesus.
Say yes to being sent
Answer God's call the way Isaiah did — 'Here I am, send me' — offering your life instead of your plan, wherever God asks you to go this week in your home, work, or neighborhood.
