Every one of us will face cave seasons of despair, but God's rescue often comes through people rather than around them. Pastor Daniel shows from David's life that hardship is inevitable and faithfulness fades in isolation, so the path from cave to calling always runs through community.

All of us will face a cave season, and we find ourselves in good company when we do.

Pastor Daniel points to First Samuel 22, where David flees to the Cave of Adullam at one of the lowest points of his life. He notes Elisha and Gideon also had cave moments, showing that despair is a common experience even for people mightily used by God.

Hardship is inevitable, but it isn't purposeless.

Drawing on 1 Peter 4, Pastor Daniel explains that believers aren't exempt from trials but are exempt from trials that don't produce glory. He warns against running from community when things get hard, insisting the days we least want to be at church are the days we most need to be there.

God rescued David in his lowest moment by sending him people.

He notes David's brothers and others joined him in the cave because David had already built relational equity before the crisis hit. Good community, he says, shows up when life is crashing down rather than only sticking around when you have something to offer.

Faithfulness fades without friends because isolation drowns out God's past faithfulness.

Pastor Daniel highlights the striking geography of David sitting in the Cave of Adullam overlooking the Valley of Elah, where he had defeated Goliath, yet unable to draw strength from that memory. He connects this to John 10:10, showing how the enemy erodes memory of God's past works when we're isolated.

David himself modeled remembering God's faithfulness, both young and old.

He contrasts David's words in 1 Samuel 17 before facing Goliath with his reflection in Psalm 77 in old age, both recalling God's past deliverance. Pastor Daniel notes it was the middle season, in isolation, when David nearly lost sight of that faithfulness altogether.

You won't just find the right friends, you have to help form them.

Pastor Daniel points out that God sent David men who were in trouble, in debt, and discontented, not polished companions, yet David shaped that group into 400 mighty men. He urges people to model vulnerability and consistency in a small group rather than waiting to stumble into ready-made friendships.

Take it into your week

Pastor Daniel frames it as going from cave to crew before you can ever step into your calling.

Application

Commit to a crew for ten weeks
Sign up for one of the small groups starting in three weeks and commit to showing up consistently for the ten-week run, even when you don't feel like it.
Don't run when life gets hard
When you make mistakes or face hardship, keep showing up to church and community instead of withdrawing or quitting on the people around you.
Remember God's past faithfulness
Actively recall or write down the miracles and provision God has already shown in your life so current hardship doesn't drown out that history.
Show up and go first in your group
Be willing to open up your own struggles and scars in your crew (after building some initial trust) rather than waiting for someone else to go deep first.
