The big idea

The war within us against sin is real, but it reveals what rules us, refines us through God's work, and redirects us to the answer, which is not our willpower but Jesus.

Even devoted followers of Jesus, like the Apostle Paul, keep fighting an internal battle against sin they don't want to lose. That struggle isn't proof God has left; it's often proof He's actively forming us. The fight has already been won at the cross, so our part is to surrender honestly to Jesus rather than trying to out-willpower sin.

The war within us is real, and even the greatest men of faith admit to it.

Using Romans 6:6 and 6:16, Pastor Joshua explains that before Christ we didn't even notice the war because sin ruled unchallenged, but after Christ we can see it because Paul is talking about authority and identity, not just behavior modification.

Willpower will never be enough to win this battle; only surrender works.

The struggle itself becomes a tool God uses to refine and form us, not evidence He has abandoned us.

Reading Paul's cry in Romans 7:24, 'oh, what a miserable person I am,' Pastor Joshua shows this is a man at the end of himself, and celebrates that the very next line points to Jesus as the answer. He tells the story of a WWII intelligence officer who kept fighting for thirty years after the war had already ended, comparing it to Christians who keep fighting a battle already won at the cross.

Take it into your week

Application

Name the battle you keep losing
Take honest stock of what habit, struggle, or version of yourself keeps pulling you back, and stop pretending it isn't there.
Quit trying to out-willpower your sin
Recognize that trying harder on your own has never been enough; the fix is surrender to God, not more effort or discipline alone.
Consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God
Choose to believe what God says is true about you even when your feelings say otherwise, since feelings are not the authority over your identity.
Give yourself completely to God
Rather than managing appearances, hand the actual struggle over to Him and let Him use it to refine and form you.
Go forward for prayer and confess it
After the service, don't carry the struggle alone anymore; go to the prayer team and be honest so you can experience healing.
