A Jesus-Focused Christmas | Daniel Goulding | Echoes Church

The big idea

In the busyness of the Christmas season, we keep Jesus at the center by waiting for His arrival, celebrating His birth, and following His example of sacrifice and service.

Christmas can easily get swallowed by chaos and busyness until Jesus gets forgotten in the middle of it. Pastor Daniel encourages us that God is worth waiting for, that Jesus's birth is the incarnation that changes everything, and that real peace only comes when we imitate the sacrificial, serving life Jesus modeled.

Point 1 of 5

Pastor Daniel points to Balaam's prophecy in Numbers 24:17 that a star would rise from Jacob, given fourteen hundred years before Jesus's birth. He notes that unlike Hollywood stars who build a following through fame, Jesus constantly pushed crowds away and let His star power come from sacrifice and service rather than stardom.

Point 2 of 5

Pastor Daniel explains that Advent literally means expectant waiting, and that Israel waited four hundred years for the Messiah while thinking God had left them. He admits he's terrible at waiting himself and warns that taking control instead of trusting God's timing has led to some of his worst decisions, quoting Isaiah 40:31 to remind listeners that those who trust the Lord find new strength.

Point 3 of 5

Pastor Daniel walks through Matthew 1:23 and the meaning of Emmanuel, God with us, calling the incarnation the most important event in human history because God became one of us rather than leaving humanity a list of rules to climb toward Him. He shares his family's Christmas morning tradition of reading the Christmas story together and describes how his mother's nativity scenes always centered around the baby in the manger as a picture of keeping Jesus central.

Point 4 of 5

Pastor Daniel contrasts the anxiety, comparison, and frustration many feel during the holidays with the peace available through Christ, citing Philippians 4:7 that God's peace guards hearts and minds. He insists gifts and appearances, like the commercial image of a car with a bow, can never produce that peace the way Jesus's presence can.

Point 5 of 5

Pastor Daniel teaches that Jesus came not just to be adored but to be imitated, referencing Mark 10:45 where the Son of Man came to serve and give His life as a ransom, and 1 John 2 which says those who live in God should live as Jesus did. He argues that a sacrificial, service-focused, others-oriented life is the counterintuitive path to real purpose and peace, unlike the world's promise that buying more things brings happiness.

Take it into your week

Pastor Daniel frames it as three simple ways to keep Jesus at the center of your home this Christmas.
