The big idea

When God calls you to go back to a place where you failed, it's not punishment — it's a comeback, because this time you're equipped differently.

God specializes in restoring what looks too broken to fix. Through the life of Moses, we see that sometimes God's plan isn't to move you forward from failure but to send you back to try again — this time with lessons learned, a God-given strategy, and a healed heart.

There is something powerful about coming to this environment, and I feel this word for somebody. As you worship, God is fighting your battle

— Dan Fernandez

Point 1 of 5

God is a redeemer who restores places of past failure into places of future purpose.

Pastor Dan tells the story of a chapel speaker at Life Pacific University who was expelled as a freshman twenty years earlier and vowed never to return, but who came back to preach in the very chapel that once held his failure, calling it the most meaningful room he'd stood in after traveling the world.

God specializes in redemption and salvation. He specializes in restoring his people

A story from life

A chapel speaker who had been expelled from Life Pacific University twenty years earlier returns to preach there and experiences a full-circle moment of restoration.

Point 2 of 5

Scripture shows a tension between being called out for good and being called back to try again.

Abraham was called out of his father's house and told never to return, but other figures like Jacob, Elijah, and the Israelites in exile were called back. Pastor Dan points to Hagar in the desert as the key example — God sees her in her hostile situation and tells her to go back, showing that sometimes the go back is God's comeback strategy.

Point 3 of 5

Moses' forty years as a shepherd secretly trained him for delivering Israel.

In Exodus 3, God gives Moses almost no instructions before sending him back to Egypt, just asking what's in your hand. Pastor Dan explains that tending Jethro's flock for forty years taught Moses to live through long seasons, to shepherd people, and to steward what belonged to someone else — all skills God would use for leading the nation.

God has a sneaky way of training us in seasons that prepare us for new seasons

Point 4 of 5

Trying again means trying with God's strategy instead of your own.

Moses' first attempt to rescue his people was killing one Egyptian, a flawed human strategy. Pastor Dan contrasts that with God's plan to bring the people out entirely, arguing that many of us fail not because the dream was wrong but because we pursued it with our own strategy and told the wrong people about it.

Point 5 of 5

Moses' refusal to go back exposed an unhealed wound, not just fear.

Pastor Dan notes that God's anger burns against Moses only when he says send someone else, and argues this wasn't insecurity but a trigger from unresolved failure. He challenges listeners to ask whether they are truly healed or just skilled at avoiding their triggers, since the go back moment exposes what still needs healing.

Take it into your week

Pastor Dan's charge is to go back and try it again — this time different.

Application

Try again with what you've learned
Look back at the season that felt wasted or painful and identify what it actually trained in you, the way Moses' shepherding years prepared him to lead Israel.
Trade your strategy for God's
If a past attempt failed because you did it your own way, write down the vision and ask God for His strategy instead of repeating the same approach.
Deal with the trigger, not just avoid it
Be honest about whether you are truly healed from a past failure or have just learned to dodge the situations that expose it, and let God bring healing rather than sending someone else in your place.
